Duration: 5 Days. The delivery format, location and dates are confirmed for each group. Audience: Maintenance technicians, instrumentation technicians and new hires joining an automation or process control department.
Prerequisites: None. No prior DCS or CENTUM VP experience is required; a basic understanding of instrumentation, electrical diagrams and process control concepts is recommended.
Course Material: PiControl certificate of completion. Software and equipment requirements are confirmed for each group.
DCS480 is a five-day course that teaches technicians and new hires with no prior experience in distributed control systems to engineer, operate and commission a Yokogawa CENTUM VP system.
It starts with the fundamentals of DCS architecture and the CENTUM VP engineering environment, then progresses through continuous control with function block diagrams, digital logic and sequence control, operator graphics and alarm management on the Human Interface Station (HIS), and finally Modbus RTU and TCP communication for integrating third-party field devices.
Along the way it covers field control station (FCS) hardware and I/O nodes, redundancy and the Vnet/IP control network; projects, domains, plant hierarchy and station types in System View; PID control block configuration, tuning parameters, and cascade and ratio basics; calculation, timer, counter and alarm detection blocks; faceplates, window calls, alarm priorities and real-time and historical trends; and the diagnostics, backup and version control that keep a running system maintainable.
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
DCS480 runs over five days: DCS fundamentals and the engineering environment; continuous control with function block diagrams; digital logic, sequencing and advanced function blocks; HIS operator graphics, alarms and trends; and Modbus communication, diagnostics and backup.
No. The course is designed for technicians and new hires with no prior experience with DCS platforms, and no prior knowledge of CENTUM VP is required. A basic understanding of instrumentation, electrical diagrams and process control concepts is recommended.
The system architecture, including the HIS, FCS, BCV, engineering station and Vnet/IP network; System View projects and plant hierarchy; the function block diagram builder; sequence tables and SEBOL basics; HIS graphics, faceplates, alarms and trends; and Modbus communication.
Yes. It covers PID control block configuration, the proportional, integral, derivative and bias tuning parameters, and cascade and ratio control basics. PID100 covers how to calculate the tuning values themselves.
Through Modbus. The course covers Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP fundamentals, configuring Modbus communication in CENTUM VP, master/slave configuration and register mapping.
Participants receive a PiControl DCS480 certificate of completion, which can be used for professional development documentation or added to a resume or LinkedIn profile.
